DEARBORN, MI (July 7, 2005) - Ford Motor Company (Ford) has agreed
to settle a class action lawsuit filed by consumers in an Oakland,
CA court. The lawsuits alleged Ford installed plastic intake
manifolds - which direct air to an engine's cylinders - that could
crack, leading to the loss of coolant.
Ford doesn't admit any liability, but terms of the settlement could
affect more than 2 millions vehicles and could cost the automaker up
to $375 million, should every affected customer file a claim. The
settlement is still subject to court approval.
The manifolds were installed in 1996 through 2001 models of Lincoln
Town Cars, Mercury Cougars and Grand Marquis, as well as Ford
Thunderbirds, Mustangs and Crown Victorias. Under terms of the
settlement, Ford will:
1. Reimburse customer with receipts for repairs made to the intake
manifold.
2. Reimburse customers without receipts $735, provided they verify
with a company dealership that the repair was made.
3. Extend the length of warranties, for customers who have not had a
manifold failure.
4. Notify all relevant car owners of the settlement.
