How to avoid BRAKE NOISE.

Brakes are arguably the most important safety feature on any vehicle. That’s why you should make sure they are in good condition and functioning correctly.

Brake noise is the number one complaint. By following these seven basic steps, you can keep vibration and the resulting noise to a minimum.

1. Use new, high-quality rotors for best results.

2. When reinstalling used rotors, machine them to meet vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. Afterwards, wash rotors with dishwashing soap and water. Do not use a brake cleaner solvent- based product.

3. Clean the calipers thoroughly, including the slides and hardware. Use brake cleaner to remove all dirt, rust and grease.

4. Use a thin film of silicone lubricant on components including:
caliper slides, rubber components and disc pad shims/insulators. It will allow the shims to withstand normal brake movement without damage and help dampen vibration. Do not use a petroleum-based or spray adhesive product; it can compromise safety and reliability.

5. Ensure the disc pads are tight in the caliper. Torque the caliper to the housing.

6. Check the adjustment of the rear brakes; adjust if necessary.

7. Clean all wheel hub mating surfaces. Then install the wheels, Tighten the lug nuts in a “star pattern,” making sure they are torqued to manufacturer’s specifications.
